Kim Rivera served in the US Army in Iraq in 2006.  What she witnessed there
made her decide to come to Canada so she would no longer be part of an
immoral war.  In 2007, she and her husband Mario and their two young
children settled in the Parkdale neighbourhood in Toronto.  They now have
two Canadian-born children as well.

In August 2012 Immigration Canada issued an order that Kim and family must
leave Canada by September 20th or face forcible removal.  The Riveras are
worried that if she is forced to go back to the US, Kim would face severe
penalties, including imprisonment.

And remember the peaceful demonstration to call on Jason Kenney to halt the
deportation of Kim Rivera and her family:  Voice of Women statement of

PETER KENT FILM – FROM 1984!  The Greenhouse Effect and Planet Earth

Organized by 350.org Toronto Chapter

Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Where: Riverside Public House (formerly the Blue Moon Pub), 725 Queen St.
E, Toronto, ON, M4M 2H5

A tongue-in-cheek tribute to Minister of the Environment Peter Kent – we
will be screening the 30 minute, 1984 documentary “The Greenhouse Effect
and Planet Earth” (written, hosted, and narrated by Kent) which explains
the science behind climate change and states in no uncertain terms that
“the greenhouse effect must be considered as the world’s greatest
environmental concern.” Since making the move from journalism to politics,
Kent has abandoned any semblance of environmentalism: in December 2011 he
formally withdrew Canada from the Kyoto Protocol, he used the 2012 Omnibus
Budget Bill C-38 to eliminate funding for energy efficiency programs and
drastically limit environmental assessments for industrial projects, and he
has supported tar sands development at every turn, pushing to maintain the
$1.4 billion in subsidies the Canadian government gives to fossil fuel
corporations annually. The film will be followed by a speaker - University
of Toronto Professor Matthew Hoffmann - who will talk a bit about the
current state of the climate and what we, as concerned citizens, can do
about it.

*SEPTEMBER 21st - OCTOBER 2ND – Climate Fast & Vigil – there are many ways
to get involved!  On Parliament Hill and Across the Country,
www.climatefast.ca*

Hungry for Climate Leadership will hold a Canada-wide Climate Fast and
Vigil, centered at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, from September 21, 2012, to
October 2, 2012. Our purpose is to call for the Canadian Government to take
action now to do its part to mitigate the climate change crisis, the
greatest threat to our children's future.

The math of climate change is this: if we dig up and use the remaining
fossil fuels we will cook the planet.  *We need to be transitioning to
renewables and we need to take action fast*.   See Bill McKibben's article
in the Rolling Stone for details.

SEPTEMBER 23RD – Interchange for Peace GTA Event – Remembering Partition
1947, 2 pm – 5 pm, OISE

Remembering Partition 1947: Dialogue for Healing and Change
In 1947, with the independence of India and Pakistan, over a million people
were killed, more than 12 million were forced to migrate, and 75000 women
were abducted.

To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the partition of India and Pakistan,
and to celebrate International Day of Peace 2012, InterChange GTA is
hosting a dialogue focused on shared understanding, healing and change. It
will be a welcoming, inclusive event where people can tell their stories;
share their experiences; and seek to understand others.

During the event, we'll ask ourselves:
1. What made it possible for people to kill their own neighbours?
2. How do the events of 1947 continue to affect people?
3. How can we move toward healing and reconciliation?

PLACE: Peace Lounge, 7th Floor South, OISE, 252 Bloor St. W. (at St.
George), Toronto

Everyone welcome.

On Saturday, September 29, friends of Rosalie Bertell will gather at Bloor

interests to oppose everything nuclear from the Marshall Islands to the
disasters in Japan.
Her opposition to  nuclear power as the source of radioactive contamination
and nuclear weapons was a constant theme.

Please come to share in this memorial event and share your stories.

*INTERNATIONAL EVENT - NOVEMBER 17TH – 19TH – Peace Cycle 2012*

An exceptional opportunity to see the sights, learn the history, meet the
people, and discover the truth about Palestine.

The Peace Cycle 2012 will take place between 7th - 19th November, and will
visit Nazareth, Jenin, Al-Fara, Nablus, Qalqilya, Bil'in, Ramallah,
Bethlehem, Hebron and Jerusalem.

As always, we will cycle so that we cause no harm to the environment and
can feel as close to the land and people as possible. Cycling also makes us
visible as we pass through towns and villages, displaying our solidarity
with those under occupation. Where possible, we will stay with people in
their homes so that we really get to know them and listen to their stories,
while at the same time contributing financially to a struggling economy.

The Peace Cycle 2012 will raise funds for the Palestine Children's Relief
Fund new Pediatric Cancer Unit at the Al Hussein Hospital in Beit Jala.

Since 2004 the Peace Cycle has organised major events and campaigns in the
UK and Europe to call for a just and lasting peace in Israel & Palestine

Stop the new Canadian Militarism

http://www.acp-cpa.ca/en/PeaceandProsperity.html
Stephen Harper wants to militarize Canada. Under the Conservatives, military spending has reached its highest levels since World War II. There are now plans to expand Canadian military bases around the world. And the military is fast becoming a central thread in the fabric of society.

We need to stop this new Canadian militarism.

The Canada First Defence Strategy is the Conservatives’ blueprint for military spending, which totals $480 billion. But some costs are already way over budget, including the proposed purchase of F35 fighter jets and the construction of new Canadian warships. That could push military spending over half a trillion dollars!

Wasting money on weapons will not create security. Real security is only possible when the people of the world can meet their basic needs. While Harper spends billions on weapons, which provide few jobs in Canada, he continues his assault on pensions, wages and collective bargaining. Sadly, the Conservatives are increasing funding for the things we need the least, while decreasing funding for the things we need the most.

In addition, Harper plans to expand the reach of Canadian forces overseas. Canada already has agreements to establish bases in Jamaica, Kuwait and Germany and is planning bases for Singapore, South Korea, Senegal, Kenya and Tanzania. This expansion would give Harper the power to embroil Canada in the affairs of sovereign states, and would redefine Canada as an aggressive military power.

The new Canadian militarism also includes dramatically raising the military’s profile in more aspects of Canadian life. In the last few years, Canada Day celebrations have been dominated by military displays and recruitment drives. Citizenship and Immigration Canada has decreed that all citizenship ceremonies must include a military speaker, in order to promote military service as the highest form of citizenship. The new citizenship handbook, Discover Canada, emphasizes Canada’s involvement in wars abroad and heaps praise on the country’s military history.

We, the undersigned, believe that money earmarked for military spending must be reallocated to social and environmental programs: to protect jobs and pensions, preserve public healthcare and education, and create a green economy.

Furthermore, we oppose any attempts by the government to expand Canadian militarism abroad or to entrench it in Canadian society.

Mettons fin au nouveau militarisme canadien

http://www.acp-cpa.ca/fr/LaPaixetlaprosperite.html

Dear Commissioners,

I understand you have been asked to cut 10% from the TTC budget.  I’m writing you to say ‘don’t do it!’

TTC does not have ‘fat’ to cut.  The city needs to find the funds for this service.  Ridership is up and that should be celebrated – not punished with cuts.  Mayor Ford says he does not want to raise taxes.  Well, a fare increase, or a decrease in service for the same cost, is a tax increase – a tax on people who can afford it least, and who are doing the right thing for our health and environment.

The only way I can see for the TTC to improve service without increased budget is to better time buses so there are not a bunch together and then a big gap.  Spreading them out evenly would spread out the passengers as well.  I am not sure the technical way to do this.  But reducing the number of buses will only increase crowdedness and make it even harder to provide consistent service.

NONE of the cuts proposed make sense, certainly not night bus service.  And a fare increase does not make sense either.  What about road tolls, or a congestion tax for cars in the downtown, as London England does?  If revenue increase is needed, why not go for behaviour we want to discourage – not ones we want to encourage.  The Mayor says he wants to decrease road congestion – cutting TTC service or raising the price will increase road congestion, and just doesn’t make sense.

Many thanks for providing good reliable transit service day in and day out. I appreciate it very much.

Lyn Adamson

Hi there wonderful women,
I'm very pleased that all of you are coming for the AGM on Saturday at Friends House, 9:30 to 1:30.  It should be a good event, and we hope to have women walking out of there feeling their power - rather than their fear.  That's what it's all about!

The agenda is flexible and we can move things around depending on your timing needs, so let me know if you'd like to see this changed.

We do have the addition of the indigenous women of the Walk4Justice, who will be staying at Friends House in Toronto all weekend as part of their country wide walk against violence.
I believe they will open the program and some of them may stay with us for the morning.  So I am imagining it will look something like this:

9:30 arrival, registration, coffee, tea and muffins
9:45 indigenous welcome and consideration of support for the Walk4Justice
10:10 Joy Warner - VOW welcome comments to set the theme - Building Peace, not Fear 10:25 transition to business session - annual report, membership, and finance (these will be brief)
10:40 chapter reports - Youth Chapter
10:50 presentation - Angela on green energy, election info
11:10  Shirley Farlinger - climate crisis action
11:20 Anna and/or Martha, action for nuclear abolition
11:40 Lyn - Freedom Flotilla, Canada Boat to Gaza report back
12:00 - Discussion - resolutions for national AGM Nov 25 - 28  (these may come out of the presentations)
12:15 - Election of new council
12:30 - Lunch and informal discussion
approx 1 pm - songs with Maria Kasstan  (15 minute set?)
1:30 -  close and clean up

So this is approximately how it could go on Saturday.  Do the times allotted look like they will work for you?  Other topics may come up from those attending. Discussion may cause some items to go over, so there will need to be some flexibility in response to the interests people express.

Thanks very much for being willing to come and be part of this AGM!!  Please feel free to contact me with your ideas, questions or concerns.
Robin and I will be at the Friends House from 9 am on Saturday, so it will be open if you'd like to come and set up a display.

Looking forward,

Lyn

The Theft of Health Rights: Can It Be Stopped? We're losing the right to manage our own health. Even the right to choose our food is being stolen. We can stop it, but only by ending the basis on which it's being done—not by addressing each action. by Heidi Stevenson 18 July 2011

A stunning theft of our rights is happening now—right under our collective noses. We're losing the right to manage our personal health as we see fit. It's a right so basic that no one ever thought to list it among the rights of free speech and assembly. Who could ever have imagined that something so basic might come into question?

That, though, is exactly what is happening. Some of us try to do battle, but we've been focusing on losses as they occur. We combat genetically modified foods, loss of access to vitamins and herbs, and much more. The war is being fought on so many different fronts that we're all suffering battle fatigue. We win an occasional bout, but lose most, which adds to our frustration.

Can this war on our personal rights be won? Are our children destined to have no choice about what they eat or how to treat illness?

I must believe that we can win, but since introducing and dealing with the Stop the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive Petition, it has became obvious that a new approach needs to be found.

Fighting Skirmishes, Not the War We've been focused on each incursion as it's brought to us. But we haven't looked at the overall picture. Even if we win a large percentage of these battles, we will still lose the war. The foes of health freedom will keep coming. When they lose one battle, they come back from a slightly different direction.

Take a look at what's just happened in the battle against genetically modified (GM) organisms. We've won skirmishes here and there, but then what happens? The profiting corporations and the agencies in charge find other ways to get what they want. And they're getting cleverer and quicker in their methods.

The application for approval of Monsanto's Scott GM Kentucky bluegrass by the USDA resulted in an outcry against it. It looked like we were winning. Then, a week ago, the USDA quietly—very quietly—announced that they will no longer even put up a show of controlling certain GMOs, specifically Monsanto's Roundup Ready Kentucky bluegrass. (See Genetic Modification Wins: Rogue USDA Hands It All to Monsanto.)

A Different Approach We need to address the tricks being used to force these disastrous rulings on us. We must stop them from claiming powers that they do not have. Therefore, I propose that we start by addressing one of the most significant claims being made in both the US and the European Union.

Both the US's FDA and the EU have been redefining terms to allow them to regulate foods, vitamins, and herbs as if they were drugs. The FDA is now labeling foods, vitamins, and herbs as drugs, and then regulating them in the same manner that pharmaceutical drugs are regulated.

A now-famous example is contained in a letter that the FDA sent to a distributor of walnuts. In it, they claimed:

...we have determined that your walnut products are promoted for conditions that cause them to be drugs because these products are intended for use in the prevention, mitigation, and treatment of disease. Just making a health claim for a food has, according to the FDA, literally turned it into a drug! That would, of course, be absurd—if it weren't so frighteningly effective.

In other cases, the FDA and the EU decide that a known health benefit of a food puts it into the category of drugs. The mere claim of a benefit makes that food a drug. In other cases, a chemical is found to exist in a food, but has been isolated and turned into a pharmaceutical drug. The FDA decides that these foods may now be regulated as drugs.

It's magical thinking! But reason and rationality have nothing to do with achieving the goal of controlling everything that people ingest and making it a profit center controllable only by Big Pharma and the agencies that are clearly at its beck and call.

As a result of these absurdities, the FDA, along with its EU equivalents, has deemed that Cheerios cereal, walnuts, marmalade made from Seville oranges, and even Marmite, may be regulated as drugs. These letters are being sent out by the dozens. With the power of the FDA behind them, the letters usually do the job. They stifle free speech by preventing health claims being made, even when they're true and backed up by dozens of scientific research projects. They force companies to stop producing and distributing products that people want, and they force companies to go out of business.
