Kim Rivera served in the US Army in Iraq in 2006. What she witnessed there
made her decide to come to Canada so she would no longer be part of an
immoral war. In 2007, she and her husband Mario and their two young
children settled in the Parkdale neighbourhood in Toronto. They now have
two Canadian-born children as well.
In August 2012 Immigration Canada issued an order that Kim and family must
leave Canada by September 20th or face forcible removal. The Riveras are
worried that if she is forced to go back to the US, Kim would face severe
penalties, including imprisonment.
And remember the peaceful demonstration to call on Jason Kenney to halt the
deportation of Kim Rivera and her family: Voice of Women statement of

PETER KENT FILM – FROM 1984! The Greenhouse Effect and Planet Earth
Organized by 350.org Toronto Chapter
Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Where: Riverside Public House (formerly the Blue Moon Pub), 725 Queen St.
E, Toronto, ON, M4M 2H5
A tongue-in-cheek tribute to Minister of the Environment Peter Kent – we
will be screening the 30 minute, 1984 documentary “The Greenhouse Effect
and Planet Earth” (written, hosted, and narrated by Kent) which explains
the science behind climate change and states in no uncertain terms that
“the greenhouse effect must be considered as the world’s greatest
environmental concern.” Since making the move from journalism to politics,
Kent has abandoned any semblance of environmentalism: in December 2011 he
formally withdrew Canada from the Kyoto Protocol, he used the 2012 Omnibus
Budget Bill C-38 to eliminate funding for energy efficiency programs and
drastically limit environmental assessments for industrial projects, and he
has supported tar sands development at every turn, pushing to maintain the
$1.4 billion in subsidies the Canadian government gives to fossil fuel
corporations annually. The film will be followed by a speaker - University
of Toronto Professor Matthew Hoffmann - who will talk a bit about the
current state of the climate and what we, as concerned citizens, can do
about it.

*SEPTEMBER 21st - OCTOBER 2ND – Climate Fast & Vigil – there are many ways
to get involved! On Parliament Hill and Across the Country,
www.climatefast.ca*
Hungry for Climate Leadership will hold a Canada-wide Climate Fast and
Vigil, centered at Parliament Hill, Ottawa, from September 21, 2012, to
October 2, 2012. Our purpose is to call for the Canadian Government to take
action now to do its part to mitigate the climate change crisis, the
greatest threat to our children's future.
The math of climate change is this: if we dig up and use the remaining
fossil fuels we will cook the planet. *We need to be transitioning to
renewables and we need to take action fast*. See Bill McKibben's article
in the Rolling Stone for details.

SEPTEMBER 23RD – Interchange for Peace GTA Event – Remembering Partition
1947, 2 pm – 5 pm, OISE
Remembering Partition 1947: Dialogue for Healing and Change
In 1947, with the independence of India and Pakistan, over a million people
were killed, more than 12 million were forced to migrate, and 75000 women
were abducted.
To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the partition of India and Pakistan,
and to celebrate International Day of Peace 2012, InterChange GTA is
hosting a dialogue focused on shared understanding, healing and change. It
will be a welcoming, inclusive event where people can tell their stories;
share their experiences; and seek to understand others.
During the event, we'll ask ourselves:
1. What made it possible for people to kill their own neighbours?
2. How do the events of 1947 continue to affect people?
3. How can we move toward healing and reconciliation?
PLACE: Peace Lounge, 7th Floor South, OISE, 252 Bloor St. W. (at St.
George), Toronto
DATE: Sunday September 23
TIME: 2-5 p.m.

*SEPTEMBER 29TH – Rosalie Bertell Remembrance, 7 pm, Bloor Street United
Church*
Everyone welcome.
On Saturday, September 29, friends of Rosalie Bertell will gather at Bloor
Street United Church, 300 Bloor Street West at 7.00 pm ( St. George
subway) to remember one of the most influential people of our time.
She was a Grey Nun, scientist, author, global citizen and inspiration to all
who work for a healthy environment. Rosalie defied the entrenched
interests to oppose everything nuclear from the Marshall Islands to the
disasters in Japan.
Her opposition to nuclear power as the source of radioactive contamination
and nuclear weapons was a constant theme.
Please come to share in this memorial event and share your stories.
Free - Sponsored by the International Institute of Concern for Public Health
A lovely commentary on Dr. Rosalie Bertell can be found in the Globe and
Mail. Thanks goes to Shirley Farlinger, the author, for taking the time to
share so beautifully some of the highlights of Rosalie's life.

*INTERNATIONAL EVENT - NOVEMBER 17TH – 19TH – Peace Cycle 2012*
An exceptional opportunity to see the sights, learn the history, meet the
people, and discover the truth about Palestine.
The Peace Cycle 2012 will take place between 7th - 19th November, and will
visit Nazareth, Jenin, Al-Fara, Nablus, Qalqilya, Bil'in, Ramallah,
Bethlehem, Hebron and Jerusalem.
As always, we will cycle so that we cause no harm to the environment and
can feel as close to the land and people as possible. Cycling also makes us
visible as we pass through towns and villages, displaying our solidarity
with those under occupation. Where possible, we will stay with people in
their homes so that we really get to know them and listen to their stories,
while at the same time contributing financially to a struggling economy.
The Peace Cycle 2012 will raise funds for the Palestine Children's Relief
Fund new Pediatric Cancer Unit at the Al Hussein Hospital in Beit Jala.
Since 2004 the Peace Cycle has organised major events and campaigns in the
UK and Europe to call for a just and lasting peace in Israel & Palestine
based on UN Resolutions and International Law.
